The University Regulations for the PhD program provide for the possibility of issuing, together with the title of Doctor of Philosophy, an additional certification of Doctor Europaeus.
Doctoral candidates may apply to the Academic Board within three months from the beginning of the final year of the program for the issuance of the Doctor Europaeus certification—supplementary to the national doctoral degree—provided that the conditions established by the European University Association are met:
a) Positive reports on the thesis prepared by two professors belonging to two European universities other than the one where the PhD is carried out, selected by the Supervisor and the Academic Board;
b) The presence of at least one member of the examining committee from a European university other than the one where the thesis is defended; this member may not coincide with one of the referees;
c) A portion of the thesis defense conducted in an official European language other than the national language of the country where the PhD is pursued;
d) Preparation of the thesis following a research stay of at least one trimester, which may be non-continuous, in an institution located in another European country.
